Lady Eagles stun Lawrence

LASKER – Northeast Academy’s Emalee Jones poured in a game-high 25 points to lead the Lady Eagles to a 43-38 upset of league-leading Lawrence Academy here Tuesday night in a Tarheel Independent Conference girls basketball game.

The Lady Eagles trailed 28-26 after three periods of play before outscoring their guests, 17-10 over the final eight minutes of play to pull off the upset.

Sarah Kate Ricks and Gracie Baker each tallied six points to help the Lady Eagles. Hayes Hatcher added four points while Leah McDermott chipped in two points.

NEA’s jayvee girls also notched a win, beating Lawrence, 35-12.

Payton Odom’s 13 points led the way for Northeast. Karson Ricks added eight points.

Northeast Academy’s boys lost both games.

In jayvee action, the Eagles rallied from a 14-5 halftime deficit, but fell short in a 30-27 loss.

Judson Smith led Northeast with 10 points. Jake Parks added six points.

The NEA varsity boys were outscored 25-3 in the second quarter as Lawrence Academy went on to hand the Eagles a 77-20 setback.

Carter Hatcher and Hunter Martin led Northeast with 10 and 8 points respectively.

On Wednesday, Northeast hosted Pungo Christian Academy and was swept in TIC action.

The Lady Eagles led 15-10 at halftime, but were outscored 14-4 in the third quarter en route to a 39-34 setback.

Jones and Hatcher led the Lady Eagles with 12 points each.

In varsity boys action, the Eagles got off to a sluggish start, trailing 38-5 at halftime, and suffered a 59-23 loss.

Hatcher (8 points) and Martin (5) topped the Northeast scoring.

Pungo also won both jayvee games: 23-19 (girls) and 42-22 (boys).

Next week, Northeast will host Albemarle School on Monday (Jan. 31); will travel to Albemarle on Tuesday (Feb. 1); and then face Ridgecroft School in consecutive games – Wednesday (Feb. 2) on the road and at home on Friday (Feb. 4) for Senior Night.
