MURFREESBORO – Edwin “Buddy” Hilton Brett, age 93, of Spring Avenue, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021 at his home.
A native of Hertford County, Mr. Brett was born on January 19, 1928 to William Clyde Brett and Dessie Rae Cowen Brett in Menola, NC. Buddy often spoke of his love for his country and was proud of his service. He served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. He was a devoted member of Meherrin Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, and on various other committees. Buddy was also a member of Masonic Lodge #17. He went back to school in his fifties to earn his GED so that he could work for the town and later retired as superintendent of public works, received an award from the Murfreesboro Fire Department for his years of service to the town of Murfreesboro, was one of the original individuals to start The Murfreesboro Rescue Squad. He loved gardening and seeing things grow, loved to read, and working on motors. Buddy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and friend. He spoke little but the way he lived spoke volume to his family and friends.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Doris B. Sebrell; and brothers, Roy Clyde Brett, Mills Thomas Brett, William Gordon Brett, and Raymond Brett.
Buddy is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce; a sister, Hilda Brett Drake of Newsoms, VA; two daughters, Deborah Brett Lane and husband David of Murfreesboro, and Wanda Brett Jordan and husband Larry of Kitty Hawk, NC; a son, Edwin “Jerry” Jerome Brett and wife Michel of Greensboro, NC; five grandsons, Jason Brett and wife Kelly of Cornelius, NC, Justin Brett and wife Catherine of Raleigh, NC, Gabriel Jordan of Wilmington, NC, Josh Lane and wife Erica of Murfreesboro, NC, and Ryan Craven and wife Laura of Raleigh, NC; two granddaughters, Abby Harkey and husband Justin of Arlington Heights, IL, and Shelley Farmer and husband Joseph of Wylie, TX; eight great-grandsons, Noah Brett, John Robert Brett, Brooks Brett, Atticus Harkey, Sumner Harkey, Gatsby Harkey, Elijah Farmer, and Nolan Craven; four great-granddaughters, Addison Lane, Maci Lane, Emmy Brett, and Ava Craven; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 22, 2021 from 5-7 p.m. at Meherrin Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, NC and other times at the home.
A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Monday, August 23, 2021 at 2 p.m. at the Meherrin Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, NC, with Rev. John Porter, officiating. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery.
