MURFREESBORO – A victim is in the hospital after sustaining wounds from a drive-by shooting on Main Street in Murfreesboro on Tuesday, June 15.
Murfreesboro Police Chief David Griffith told the News Herald the crime occurred around 6:30 p.m. in front of Walter’s Grill.
According to Griffith, the 22-year-old victim, who is pregnant, was the sole occupant of a passenger vehicle and was driving east down Main Street when a car with more than one person pulled up and cut her vehicle off from continuing down the road.
“They fired multiple rounds into her vehicle, striking her in an upper portion of her body,” Griffith continued.
She was airlifted by EastCare to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where she is listed in stable condition. Griffith also stated he believes she was the intended target of the shooting.
“Right now, we’re combing through witness statements. We are processing her car. We have several leads we’re tracking down today,” Griffith said Wednesday morning. “I feel very confident that someone or multiple someones will be charged in the near future.”
He said those charges would include first degree attempted murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, going armed to the terror of the public, and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting bodily injury. There could be other charges as well.
“It was a total lack of regard for human life,” Griffith said, not only for the victim but also for bystanders in the area. “That is probably one of the busiest times of the evening for Main Street Murfreesboro.”
Griffith thanked the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, Hertford County EMS, and EastCare for their assistance on the scene. He also thanked several nearby citizens who helped to provide aid until EMS arrived.
“I want to thank our townspeople who came together. This is a community problem,” he continued. “We’ve been seeing an uptick in violence in the Roanoke-Chowan area over the last couple of years.”
