SUNBURY, NC – Sonya E. Godwin, 52, of Sunbury was born on February 9, 1969 and transitioned from this life on February 26, 2021.

She joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church at a young age where she served the Lord. She remained a member throughout the years and later directed her two children to join and serve there as well.

Sonya attended Gates County Public Schools and furthered her education at Elizabeth City State University where she received a BS degree in business administration in 1991.

She began her career at the Gates County Water Department. She was later employed by Gates County Schools as an Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, followed by serving as a Clerk to the Board of Education and also as a Bookkeeper at Gates County High School.

Sonya enjoyed the arts of crocheting and wreath making.

She was joined in holy matrimony on April 2, 1994 to Pollard Cornelius Godwin. To this union two children were born.

Sonya was preceded in death by her guardian Grandmother, the late Alice B. Eason.

Leaving to cherish her precious memories are: her husband, Pollard Cornelius Godwin of nearly 27 years; their two children, LaShaunna and Derrion Godwin of Sunbury; an unborn granddaughter, DeKinzie Caeli Godwin; parents, Rubylene (Randy) Gaskins of Ft. Washington, MD; siblings, Tony (Ros) Gaskins of Upper Marlboro, MD, brother; and Kylie Gaskins of Clinton, MD, sister; father-in-law, Cortez Godwin of Gates County; mother-in-law, Betty Liverman of Eure, NC; two sisters-in-law, Tore Godwin of Elizabeth City and Alfredia Hunter Godwin of Gates County; aunt/godmother, Marie Lewis of Ahoskie; spiritual guardian and uncle, Willie Brown; several nieces and nephews, many cousins, and a host of dear friends.

The family welcomes friends and members of the community for a viewing at The Community of Hope Funeral Home on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 3-6 p.m.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at The Upper Room Assembly at 12 pm.
