ELIZABETH CITY, NC – Norman Earl Jones passed away Nov. 16, 2020 at the age of 79. Norman was born in Sunbury, NC on Feb. 8, 1941 to Robert and Elsie (Powell) Jones. He graduated from Sunbury High School, class of 1959.

After working part-time jobs since the age of 14, Norman moved to Elizabeth City in 1960 where he got a job with the telephone company there. In 1966, he started working for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a marine electrician. In 1974, he transferred to Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Ca., where he retired in 1995 after almost 30 years of service with the Federal Government, some of this time as a ship inspector. He also served in the Coast Guard Reserves. He moved back to Elizabeth City in 2009.

Some of his favorite hobbies were classic cars and coin collecting, and was very knowledgeable in both of these subjects. Sadly, in 2017, his eldest son – Anthony Earl Jones of Shasta Lake, Ca, passed away due to cancer.

Norman is survived by two children, Donna Lynn Whitney of Napa, Ca, and Troy Daniel Jones of Elizabeth City, NC, as well as several grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Norman will always be remembered as a hardworking, dedicated father that would do anything for his children. He will be forever loved by his family and those who knew him.

If you wish to make a contribution in Norman’s memory, the family suggests an act of kindness toward someone in need would be greatly appreciated. We know it would make him happy, as he was a very generous and kind-hearted man.

At Norman’s request, no service will be held.
