MURFREESBORO – Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Murfreesboro Historical Association (MHA) will not be able to host its traditional Candlelight Christmas Tour fundraiser. However, to confirm that the Grinch has not taken over Christmas, a modified event will be held Dec. 11-12 to help keep the spirit of Christmas alive and well in Murfreesboro.
MHA will join the Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Murfreesboro, and Chowan University in providing a meaningful holiday experience for residents and visitors. The “Holiday Magic” lighting the town began Nov. 13 and runs through Jan. 10, 2021.
MHA has selected Friday, Dec. 11 and Saturday, Dec. 12 from 5-8 pm for a special event in the Historical District centered on Williams Street and Fourth Street between Williams and Broad Street. The theme for this event is “A Step Back in Time” and will feature period decorations, costumed docents, various live musical venues and living history demonstrations. The District will be lighted as during normal Candlelight Christmas with festive lights and the traditional candles.
This event is primarily a walking/strolling event though limited transportation will be available for those needing assistance. Free parking will be available in the old Maxway parking lot as well as the parking area behind the Elizabeth S. Parker Library. Regretfully no food or drink will be served during this event.
There will be no charge for “A Step Back in Time” and MHA officials hope you will join them for this limited, though festive, seasonal event. However, as most of you know, MHA is a non-profit association dedicated to preserving the history of Murfreesboro along with maintaining the numerous historically significant buildings owned by the Association. All of our members and the costumed docents and musicians you will encounter during this event are volunteers.
During the Candlelight event, the Historical Association will have a Christmas Shop open on Williams Street with antiques, books, collectables, Christmas items, and more on sale. Be sure stop in and browse while enjoying the evening’s sights and sounds!
COVID-19 has severely impacted MHA’s normal fundraising events, so they, along with many other similar organizations within the community, have been severely impacted. Accordingly, donations will be gratefully accepted and appreciated. If you are so inclined, donations can be made during the event or mailed to The Murfreesboro Historical Association, PO Box 3, Murfreesboro, NC 27855.
In return for your donation, you will be provided with a discount coupon which is redeemable at one of the following fine Murfreesboro dining establishments: TAVERN 125, JOHN’s SEAFOOD, KINGS LANDING, NAPOLI and WALTER’S GRILL.
MHA’s objective during this event is to invite you to enjoy a family oriented seasonal event while focusing attention on MHA and raising the community awareness of the role and function of MHA in preserving and promoting Murfreesboro’s storied history. MHA also views this event as a starting point and reason to spend an evening in Murfreesboro, enjoying the festive sights and sounds and perhaps a dining out experience in one of the several fine Murfreesboro restaurants.
In the meantime, be safe, practice social distancing, and please wear a mask when appropriate.
