AHOSKIE – Dennis Earl Layton, 64, of 125 Shady Lane, died Friday, August 7, 2020 at his brother’s home in Edenton where he was being cared for by his family.

Dennis was born December 2, 1955 in Chowan County and was the son of Sallie Overton Layton Hare of Edenton and the late Raymond Harrell Layton, Sr. A carpenter and commercial fisherman, he was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church.

With his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Elbert and Wade Layton; and his step-father, Worth H. Hare, Sr.

In addition to his mother, survivors include two daughters, Brandy Ferrell, her husband John, and their daughter, Lacey, of Elizabeth City, and Sayward Layton of Gatesville; two brothers, R.H. Layton, Jr. (Tracy) and Brent Layton (Linda), all of Edenton; a niece and six nephews. Also surviving is his longtime companion, Joan Pierce Evans and her family, daughter Catherine Harrell (Kevin), and grandchildren, Calvin and Ella Harrell.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 10, 2020 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and was conducted by the Rev. Wallace Phillips. A private burial followed in the Layton Family Cemetery.

Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service where social distancing guidelines will be followed. At all other times they are meeting at the R.H. and Tracy’s home, 601 Rocky Hock Creek Road.
