MURFREESBORO, NC – Bessie Marie Horton Harrell, age 87, of Murfreesboro passed away on Monday, April 13, 2020 at the Gates House Assisted Living of Gatesville.

She was born in Hertford County on January 1, 1933 to Arthur and Margaret  Horton. Bessie was married to George Thomas Harrell in November of 1952 and to this marriage was born three children. She was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro and worked as a shipping clerk in the textile industry for twenty years. She loved her dog, Penny, and enjoyed, baking, cooking, sewing, making crafts and watching soap operas.

She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Robert Horton; her mother, Margaret Horton; her husband, George Thomas Harrell; her son, Stewart A. Harrell; her sisters, Lillie Gray Wells, and Jane Daniels; and her grandson, Alex Harrell.

Bessie is survived by her two sons, Dale A. Harrell and his wife Sissy of Murfreesboro, and Thomas A. Harrell and his wife Pat of Margarettsville; her sister, Linda Bristow of Ahoskie; her brother, Arthur Lee Horton and his wife Sandy of Rich Square; four grandsons, Brad Harrell of Murfreesboro, Lee Smith of Raleigh, Jordan Harrell of Greenville, and Austin Harrell of Rocky Mount; two granddaughters, Kim Ray and her husband Randy of Milwaukee and Melissa White and her husband Nate of Rich Square; one great-granddaughter, Brittany Ray of Milwaukee; and one great-grandson, Ryan Ray of Milwaukee.

Friends and family are invited to visit Garrett-Sykes Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro between the hours of 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2020 to pay respects to Mrs. Harrell.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in  Eure.
