MURFREESBORO, NC – Thomas Alton “Tommy” Umphlette, Jr., age 70, passed away on Friday, December 20, 2019 at the Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA.

Tommy was born on March 12, 1949 to Thomas Alton Umphlette and Louise Griffin Radford in Norfolk, VA. He loved his family very much, especially his grandchildren. Tommy enjoyed trips to the beach, fast cars, motorcycles, and playing golf with his friend, David Nixon. Tommy found his true love with Susan; she was his companion for nearly twenty years. He was a former member of the Murfreesboro Fire Department, retired from Georgia-Pacific and owned several mobile home sites throughout the area. Tommy was loved by many and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Besides his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Willie S. “Mimi” Saville, paternal grandparents, James T. Umphlette and Ruth S. Umphlette, stepmother, Catherine S. Umphlette, stepfather, T.G. Radford, and half-brother, Talmage F. Radford.

Left to cherish Tommy’s memory is his daughter, Shannon Weeks and husband Clarke of Emporia, VA; partner, Susan Kienitz of Murfreesboro; step-daughter, Michelle Young and husband Brandon of Eure; sister, Sharon U. Bailey and husband Jack of Fredericksburg, VA; half-sister, Pamela R. Long and husband Steven of Missouri; four grandsons, Hunter Cottee of Yorktown, VA, Cole Weeks of Emporia, VA, Tristan Young of Eure, and Dominic Young of Eure; niece, Tammy Dye of Fredericksburg, VA; nephew, Jack Bailey, IV of Fredericksburg, VA; and his special fur baby cat, Kitty.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 29, 2019, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Memorial Chapel – Murfreesboro, NC with a graveside service to follow at 2:30 pm at the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Wayne Proctor officiating.
