AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie man is jailed under a $50,000 secured bond after he allegedly used a knife as a weapon to rob a business here Saturday.

Rashad Jerrod Taylor, age 32, stands charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He remained in the Hertford County Jail following his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Ahoskie Police Major Jimmy Asbell said the robbery occurred at around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 at Citi Trends, located in Newmarket Shopping Center.

Asbell said a male, later identified as Taylor, entered the business armed with a knife.

“He went directly to the checkout counter at which time he ordered the clerk to open the cash register,” Asbell stated. “He then reached inside the register at which time he grabbed an undisclosed amount of money and exited the store.”

Asbell added that no one was injured at the store during the robbery.

Ahoskie Police Officers Tyler Burden and Ryan Deanes responded to the call.

“After they were able to gather information on the suspect, a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) was dispatched to other agencies,” Asbell said. “A short time later, Sgt. Zack Mize with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office spotted an individual matching the description of our suspect.”

With the assistance of Ahoskie Police Sgt. Clifton Whitby and his K-9 Rico, the suspect was tracked to an area near Catherine Creek Road where Taylor was arrested less than one hour after the robbery.

APD Investigator Justin Farmer and HCSO Sgt. Kendall Swain also assisted in the case.

Asbell thanked Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes and his deputies for their assistance.
