AHOSKIE – The Ahoskie Police Department and the North Carolina SBI are investigating what caused the death of a 25-year-man here late Friday night.

APD Chief Troy Fitzhugh told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that the results of a pending autopsy will determine the cause of the man’s death.

He said his officers received a call shortly before midnight Friday to respond to a residence in the 200 block of NC 561 East near Holloman’s Lane. Upon arrival, the officers saw an unresponsive man inside a residence. That individual had been shot, Fitzhugh said.

“We were not able to determine if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or if this was a homicide,” Fitzhugh stated. “We summoned the SBI, who arrived on the scene at around 2 a.m. and performed an on-site investigation.”

The body was sent to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office in Greenville where an autopsy will be performed.
