AHOSKIE – The Doctor Joseph D. Weaver Scholarship Foundation did something a little different for 2019.

The Foundation members decided that instead of giving their traditional $1,000 scholarships to three individuals, they opted to help all 14 applicants by giving each a $500 scholarship.

“The Foundation recognizes that we gave more than twice the money we usually give, but we wanted to help all 14 students this year,” said Foundation Board President Dwight Ransome.

The Foundation began awarding scholarships in 1998, before Dr. Weaver passed away. Now, counting the 14 scholarships awarded Sunday, June 23 at New Ahoskie Baptist Church, the Foundation has given approximately $56,000 to local students in an effort to further their education. They awarded scholarships every two years.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who give so generously so that we can pay it forward. The Foundation is committed to keeping this wonderful legacy of giving alive,” added Ransome, speaking on behalf of the Foundation.
