WINTON – The Hertford County Public Library in Winton will be able to provide some extra programs in August this year thanks to Dominion Energy. The library staff received a $1,000 grant from the power company in a presentation on Thursday, May 30.

Branch Manager Tomeka Roulhac said she had applied for the grant earlier this year after she happened to discover the online application. She said the process to apply was simple and was made easier by the lack of a deadline. They then received word of the award fairly quickly.

The extra funding will go towards the library’s summer reading program.

“With the grant, even though our summer reading program is ending at the end of July, we were able to add a few programs in August,” Roulhac explained, noting she was excited they were chosen to receive the extra funding.

The summer reading program is an annual event held at each of the seven branches of the Albemarle Regional Library which covers Hertford, Bertie, Gates, and Northampton counties. This year’s theme is “Universe of Stories,” which Roulhac said was chosen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

“We’ve got some fun stuff in store,” said fellow library staffer Towanda Mitchell.

The grant comes from the Dominion Foundation, a part of the company that is focused on charitable donations to the communities they serve. Dominion representative Winnie Wiseman said the Hertford County Public Library was the first library that she had presented a grant to this year so far.

The foundation provides grant money to 501(c)(3) nonprofits that serve their communities in a variety of ways. Last year, they provided over $30 million in funding to nonprofits in service areas across the United States.

“Our four main focus areas are education, environmental stewardship, human needs, and community vitality,” Wiseman explained. “I’m so glad we could help you all in any way. We’re proud to help the community where we serve.”

“I’m so appreciative of public libraries. They’re awesome,” Wiseman continued. “We need to encourage our kids to read more.”

The Hertford County Public Library is located at 303 West Tryon Street in Winton. The summer reading program kicks off in early June.
