WINDSOR – The driver of a motorcycle was killed near here late Tuesday afternoon during a two-vehicle accident along NC 308 (Governor’s Road), near its intersection with School Road.

Nathan Lee Jr., age 75 of Windsor, died at the scene of the accident, according to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.V. Reid.

Reid’s report showed that Lee, traveling eastbound, had slowed his 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle and was preparing to make a right turn into the driveway of his residence shortly before 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, a 2006 Hyundai SUV, operated by 24-year-old Heather Barnes of Windsor, was also traveling eastbound, trailing the motorcycle. As Lee slowed to turn, Barnes’ SUV struck the motorcycle in the rear, according to the report.

Trooper Reid charged Barnes with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. She was also issued citations for having no operator’s license and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The fatal wreck was the third this year in Bertie County and the fifth in the NCHP’s Troop A / District II area, which also includes Gates and Hertford counties.
