AHOSKIE – Memorial Day weekend proved deadly in the Roanoke-Chowan area.

Trauna Ladazia Williams, 20, of Menola Road, Woodland, died after being trapped inside her burning car following a single-vehicle accident as she was returning home from Sunday morning breakfast with a family member.

The accident occurred on the Menola-St John Road, a short distance from its intersection with Britton Road in Hertford County.

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper H.M. Mizelle, Williams was operating a 2011 Nissan passenger car shortly after 9 a.m.

The vehicle was traveling westbound on the Menola-St. John Road at which time it crossed the centerline and traveled off the roadway to the left. Mizelle’s report then showed the driver overcorrecting, causing the vehicle to travel back onto the roadway where it ran off the right side, struck a ditch, impacted a tree, and caught fire.

What caused Williams to initially lose control of her vehicle is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

The St. John Volunteer Fire Department and Hertford County EMS responded along with the Highway Patrol.

The fatal accident was the fourth this year in the NCHP’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). It was the first of the year in Hertford County.
