POTECASI – A Scotland Neck man had his vehicle seized near here Saturday night after he tried to elude arrest upon failing to stop at a license checking station.

Davante Jones was charged with felony speed to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, and RDO (Resist, Delay, Obstruct a law enforcement officer).

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. A.S. Genao, a checking station was set up along NC 35 in the Potecasi area on Saturday night. He said around 10:30 pm, a Honda passenger car approached the checking station and failed to stop.

“The driver (later identified as Jones) blew through the checking station,” Sgt. Genao said. “Trooper P. Dennis initiated a pursuit of the vehicle, which turned onto Griffintown Road, and then reached speeds of 80 mph.”

Genao added that the suspect vehicle then wrecked and the driver attempted to flee on foot.

“Trooper Dennis was able to overtake the driver and place him under arrest. Trooper Dennis handled the incident in textbook manner,” Sgt. Genao stated.

He added that Jones’ vehicle was seized by authority of North Carolina’s “Run and Your Done” law. That law, enacted in 2011, allows North Carolina law enforcement officers to impound the vehicle of a defendant convicted of felony speeding to elude. Upon conviction, the defendant’s car or truck will be auctioned off with the proceeds to be given to North Carolina School Systems.
