GASTON – A birthday party turned deadly here Friday night where one individual was shot and killed and three others hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald that the shooting took place at around 11:30 p.m. at a building owned by the Town of Gaston located at 221 Craige Street.

“It was being used at that time for a private birthday party,” Sheriff Smith said. “Our investigation to this point leads us to believe that several fights broke out involving some individuals, both inside and outside the building, followed by gunshots being fired.”

The deceased is 53 year-old Dexter Robinson of Roanoke Rapids. The names of other three victims that were shot and survived were not immediately made available. The three surviving victims are being treated at unknown hospital.

Smith said there were between 30 to 50 people attending the party. Interviews were conducted in an effort to obtain information as to the identity of the shooter.

The Northampton Sheriff’s Office and the SBI are assisting the Gaston Police Department with the investigation.

Anyone with information on people that were involved or who were at the establishment or that have information to help the investigation is encouraged to contact the Northampton Co. Sheriff’s Office at 252-534-2611 or Anonymous Crime Stoppers Line at 252-534-1110.

Friday’s deadly shooting at a birthday gathering was the second this year in the Roanoke-Chowan area.

In the early morning hours of Jan. 6, Rayshon Carter, 36 of Merry Hill, was murdered when shots rang out at an adult birthday party at the Merry Hill/Midway Community Building located across from the Midway Volunteer Fire Department on NC Hwy 45 near the US 17 intersection.

One individual – 28-year-old Tywan Jonshea’ Outlaw of Colerain – was arrested four days later at an apartment in Franklin, VA. He was charged with accessory after the fact to felony murder.

Meanwhile, the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office has first-degree murder warrants drawn for 29-year-old Jashawn De’Andre Brown of Colerain, who remains at large.
