MIDWAY – One man is dead and law enforcement officials are seeking more information on the incident after a fatal shooting here early Sunday morning.

Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said his office received a 911 call in the early morning hours of Jan. 6 that shots had been fired at the Community Building located across from the Midway Volunteer Fire Department on NC Hwy 45 near the US 17 intersection.

Deputies responded to the scene within minutes and found one unidentified victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

That subject was then transported by Bertie EMS to a rendezvous location where he was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where he succumbed from his wounds.

According to Holley, the incident occurred at an adult birthday party being held at the Community Building and the shooting reportedly happened after a fight broke out.

The NC State Bureau of Investigation has been called in and they are assisting the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office with an investigation of this incident, which has been ruled as a homicide.
