POWELLSVILLE, NC – Rebecca Edwards “Becky” Carter, age 89, of Powellsville, North Carolina died Sunday, November 4, 2018, at home, after a diagnosis of lung cancer in September.

Born in Franklin, VA on May 3, 1929, she was the eldest daughter of Ryland Thomas and Josie Rebecca Vaughan Edwards. She wed Ernest Rawls “Buck” Carter of Powellsville on August 19, 1956.

She was predeceased by her husband; her grandson, Carter Stephenson; her parents; her brothers, Robert and Vaughan; and an infant sister, Ellen.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jennifer Stephenson (Kent), of Franklin, Virginia, and Ernie Carter (Gail), of Powellsville; and her grandchildren, Rebecca Stephenson Harper (Witt) of Franklin, VA,

Hinton Carter of Chapel Hill, Mollie Carter of Raleigh, and Will Carter of Wilmington. She is also survived by her siblings, Gaynelle Riddick and Frankie Edwards (Sandra) of Franklin, VA, Lucille Carter of Raleigh, Lena Giles (George) of Morristown, TN, and many other Edwards and Carter family members.

After graduation from Franklin High School, she attended Virginia Baptist Hospital for nursing training. A Registered Nurse since 1950, over the course of her 43-year career she served in various roles with great pride and dedication. She retired as Director of Nursing at Guardian Care of Ahoskie in 1993.

She was a devoted member of Powellsville United Methodist Church, having been recently honored in the dedication of the Carter-Moseley Hall of Faith and Fellowship. She proudly served as a member of the Ahoskie Woman’s Club for over 50 years, having served as its President and chairing many committees and projects. Her dedicated service to Historic Hope Foundation, Inc. in Windsor, particularly her stewardship as its Treasurer for many years, was rewarded with a Life Directorship on its Board.

In keeping with her wishes, her life will be celebrated at a graveside service and inurnment at Highland Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 8 near Powellsville. A reception at Powellsville United Methodist Church for all friends and family will immediately follow the service.
