Joseph “Tom” Bridgers

BURLINGTON, N.C. – Joseph Thomas “Tom” Bridgers, 66, died Oct. 27, 2018 at Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Alamance County.

Born Nov. 3, 1951, in Hertford County, N.C., he was the son of Howard and Marion Stephenson Bridgers of Jackson, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret Lynn Bridgers and Dean Dawkins; and a brother, Whit Bridgers.

Tom is survived by his wife, Betty Wray Hobbs Bridgers of Liberty Commons; a sister, Susan Bridgers Walton of Raleigh; and several nieces and nephews.

He grew up in Jackson, where he attended Jackson Baptist Church. He graduated from Northampton-East High School and Halifax Community College. A longtime resident of Woodland, N.C., Tom served as a deacon and usher at Woodland Baptist Church. He worked at Woodland Supermarket for 22 years. He loved to play solitaire and to read aloud to Betty. He was married for 33 years to Betty, whom he often said was the love of his life. He also said he was the eyes of the family, and she was the brains.

A celebration of his life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, preceded by visitation with the family from 10 to 11, at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, 116 Short St. in Rich Square, N.C.
