Margaret L. Burden

AULANDER, NC – Margaret Lowe Burden, age 94, passed away on October 9, 2018 at her home.

Mrs. Burden was born in Hertford County on October 12, 1923, a daughter of the late Carroll J. and Joanna Kiff Lowe. Margaret worked as an Administrative Assistant for the American Red Cross Headquarters. She was a loving, devoted wife and mother who enjoyed being much involved in her children’s school and sports activities in Annandale, VA.

She and her late husband, Wingate Rice Burden, Sr., were faithful, active members of First Baptist Church of Annandale until moving to Aulander where they became active in Aulander Baptist Church, with her serving as secretary of the Dorcas Sunday School Class for many years, along with various other church activities. Besides church, Margaret enjoyed working in her yard, and was very active in community activities, including being a former member of the Aulander Civic League, the NC State Society of D.C. and was a Cub Scout Leader for many years.

Mrs. Burden was a special lady and will be missed by all who knew her.

Besides her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her sisters, Carolyn Lowe Lawyer, and Mattie Schwalenberg.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Wingate “Chip” Burden Jr. and wife, Deborah of Kitty Hawk, NC, and James “Jim” Lowe Burden and wife, Cindy of Poquoson, VA; her sister, Mildred L. Staton of Goldsboro, NC; a granddaughter, Melissa Burden Overton and husband, Jake of Kill Devil Hills, NC; three grandsons, Nick Burden of Kitty Hawk, NC, and Scott Burden and Brad Burden of Poquoson, VA; and two great grandsons, Jax Overton, and Jennings Overton. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC prior to services.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Jerry Johnson, officiating. Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery.
