Combined Task Force nets arrest

LEWISTON – Bertie County Sheriff John Holley says members of the Down East Drug Task Force along with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics/Gang Unit have arrested a Windsor man on drug trafficking charges following a short chase in Lewiston.

Holley said the agents encountered the suspect, 34-year-old Victor Speller of 1044-B Republican Road, on Aug. 20 at the internet sweepstakes café in Lewiston around 3:28p.m.

According to the Sheriff, as Sgt. Martin Phelps of the Narcotics/Gang Unit approached Speller, the subject immediately fled on foot for a short distance before being chased down and arrested by Phelps.

Speller was charged with possession with intent to sell and/or distribute marijuana, possession with intent to sell and/or distribute cocaine, maintaining a vehicle to keep/store a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting, delaying and/or obstructing a law enforcement officer.

After being taken to the Bertie/Martin County Jail, Speller was given a $20,000 secured bond and his first court appearance was set for Aug. 22.

Speller later posted bond following his arrest and was released from custody.
