NASHVILLE, NC – John Gilbert Powell passed away on July 15, 2018. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was born January 1, 1932 to William Sidney and Ora Carter Powell.
John grew up in Nash County, where he graduated from Spring Hope High School. He joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. Following his service, he attended Chowan College where he earned a degree in Graphic Arts. He worked with the News-Herald in Ahoskie for many years. After retirement, he enjoyed driving cars with “the guys” and directing traffic at ECU football games. John was a great weekend golfer and loved to read and watch westerns.
He was the loving husband to Joyce Rackley Powell for 62 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Teresa Powell Dilday and her husband Kyle Dilday, and daughter Johnna Powell Marshburn and her fiancé, Billy Smith; as well as his brother Warner Powell; five grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and one expectant great grandchild.
A celebration of his life was held at Cornerstone Funeral Home, Nashville, NC on Thursday, July 19.
