Beulah M. Hoggard

POWELLSVILLE – Beulah Lyon Miller Hoggard, age 95, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC. A native of Bertie County, North Carolina, she was born on July 12, 1923 to the late Henderson U. Miller and Gladys Lyon Miller. Beulah was reared in the home of the late H.O. Raynor and Annie Harrell Raynor of Powellsville.

Beulah was a graduate of Powellsville High School and Kee’s Secretarial College in Norfolk, VA. She went to work at the Bank of Ahoskie after graduation and worked there until she married her high school sweetheart, Joseph C. “Buck” Hoggard, on November 27, 1942. They shared a loving and devoted marriage of 64 years. “Buck” was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941-1945, stationed at Kirkland Field, Albuquerque, NM. They lived there for four years until he deployed overseas. After WWII, they lived in Ahoskie and later moved to Powellsville. Beulah served as Postmaster until Buck was appointed. Beulah was a longtime faithful member of Powellsville Baptist Church for approximately 70 years, where she enjoyed attending Sunday School, active in Girl’s Auxiliary, WMU, and listening to “Buck” sing in the choir. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt that will be deeply missed by all that knew her.

Beulah is survived by her son, Carlyle O. Hoggard, and wife Daniela, of Powellsville, NC; her daughter, Nancy H. White, and husband Tommy, of Atlantic Beach, NC; and grandson, Jeffrey C. Hoggard, and wife Susan, of Ahoskie, NC. Also surviving is her brother, Henry L. Miller of Murfreesboro; three nieces and six nephews.

Along with her parents, Beulah was predeceased by her firstborn infant daughter, Jo Anne Hoggard; her beloved husband, Joseph C. “Buck” Hoggard; two brothers, Virgil E. Miller and H.U. Miller; three half-brothers, Jesse Y. Miller, Denny D. Miller, and Paul V. Miller; and a half- sister, Gladys M. Lee.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Powellsville Baptist Church, Powellsville, NC, with the Rev. Walter Johnson, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center and then proceed to Highland Memorial Gardens where she will be laid to rest.
