LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – A Martin County woman en route to her job Monday morning at the Perdue processing plant near here tragically lost her life in a motor vehicle accident.

The Ahoskie office of the North Carolina Highway Patrol reports that 25-year-old Ginger Cowan of Williamston died at the scene of the two-vehicle mishap that took place at 7:06 a.m. on NC 308 near the entrance of the Perdue facility.

The NCHP report showed that Cowan was operating a 2001 Honda passenger car westbound on NC 308 at the time of the accident. Her vehicle crossed the centerline and struck another vehicle head-on, according to the report.

The other vehicle involved was a 1999 Dodge van driven by 65-year-old Linwood Wilkins of Kelford. That vehicle was eastbound on NC 308.

According to the NCHP report, Wilkins suffered a broken leg and was transported by Bertie County EMS to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Neither driver had passengers in their vehicles.

The Highway Patrol said the only contributing factor to the crash was Cowan’s vehicle crossing the centerline.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, according to the accident report.

The fatality was the third of 2018 in the NCHP’s Troop A / District II area. Two of those fatalities have occurred in Bertie County.
