June 7, 1949 – June 6, 2018

MURFREESBORO, NC – Russell Harvey Lyles II, “Russ”, age 68, died Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC.

Mr. Lyles was born June 7, 1949 in Linden, NJ to Russell Harvey and Nellie Taylor Lyles. Russ served as a Supervisor and Administrator for both Hertford County Public Schools, and Weldon City Public Schools, and adjunct History professor for both Halifax Community College, and Chowan University before retiring. He was a member of Valley Community Church in Weldon, NC.

Russ was loved by many, and enjoyed collecting stamps & coins, collecting and displaying Lionel trains throughout the home, and is also known for his quick-witted humor with his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Harvey Lyles, and the love of his life, Edna Oliver Lyles.

Russ is survived by his two devoted and loving daughters, Meredyth Lyles Corey and husband Chris, of

Woodland, NC, and Elizabeth Lyles Shores and husband Woody, of Aulander, NC; and three precious grandchildren, Christopher Aidan Corey, Sophia Elizabeth Shores and Brandon Whitley Shores. He is also survived by his loving mother, Nellie Taylor Lyles of Franklin, VA.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am prior to the celebration of life service, which will be held at 11:00 am at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, North Carolina, with Pastor David Schmaltz officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, North Carolina.
