Bettie S. Grimes

MURFREESBORO, NC – Bettie Slaughter Grimes, age 67, passed away on March 2, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center of Greenville, NC.
Mrs. Grimes was born on July 31, 1950 to the late Reuben and Elsie Chamblee Slaughter in Ahoskie, NC. Bettie worked as a receptionist for Chowan University, formerly Chowan College for many years before retiring. She cherished her family, especially her grandchildren. Bettie loved music, playing the piano for Meherrin Baptist Church for many years. She also enjoyed cooking, best known for her cakes, pies, and her famously desired peanut butter fudge. Bettie adored her pets, especially her chickens, better known as her “girls”. She spent as much time as possible outdoors soaking up the beautiful sunshine. Bettie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother that will be deeply missed.
Bettie is survived by her husband Bill; two daughters, Angie Colson Burgess and husband Keb of Camden, NC, and Abby Colson Landing and husband Jason of Belvidere, NC; along with two grandchildren, Ty and Bailey Burgess of Camden.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at 11:00 am at Meherrin Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, NC, with Rev. John Porter, officiating. There will be a reception following for the family to receive friends in the fellowship hall along with a meal. The family asks those planning to make food for the family that it be delivered to the fellowship hall to be used for the reception following the service.
