Daphne J. Askew

AHOSKIE, NC – Daphne Jilcott Askew, age 88, of 1002 Troy Street West, died Monday, February 12, 2018 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, caring sister and friend.

Mrs. Askew was born in Roxobel, NC on August 12, 1929, daughter of the late J J Jilcott and Eva Bishop Jilcott.

She was a long-time member of Creech Memorial Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, choir director, WMU director and many other phases of work in the church. She was a walking testimony of her Christian faith and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was a graduate of East Carolina College, also a high school math and social studies teacher at Ahoskie High School, Rich Square High School, and Hertford County High School from which she retired after 23 years of service.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jerry and wife Robyn, Donald and wife Karen, Eva and husband James Early, and Georgia and husband Jerry Perry; grandchildren, Grant Askew, wife Whitney, Taylor Askew, wife Addie, Josh Morris, Christin Perry, Avery Askew, Thomas Perry, Elizabeth Perry, Hannah Early, and Daniel Early; and great grandchildren, Emma and Charlotte Askew.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Askew was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Jerome H. “Slick” Askew; a son, Gordon Hughes Askew; three sisters, Kathleen J. White, Marian J. Spinner, and Mabel J. Carnes; and three brothers, Poe, George, and Judson Jilcott.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC and other times at the home of James and Eva Early.

A celebration of life service will be conducted on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at 11:00 am at Creech Memorial Baptist Church, Ahoskie, NC, with the Reverend David Duncan, officiating. Burial will follow in the Ahoskie Cemetery.
