AHOSKIE, NC – Margaret Freeman Joyner, age 96, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Accordius Health at Creekside Care in Ahoskie.

She was born in Bertie County on February 7, 1921 to the late Herbert and Cecie Parker Freeman. She was very active in her community and church over the years and enjoyed her family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Meredith Joyner, Sr.; her son, Dr. Ronald Freeman Joyner; her grandson, James Meredith Joyner, III; her sister, Elizabeth Miller, and her brothers H.C., Laten, and Lewis Freeman.

Margaret is survived by her son, James Meredith Joyner, Jr. and his wife, Sue, of Greensboro; her daughter, Anita Joyner Ruffin of Raleigh; her son, Larry Warren Joyner and his wife, Susan, of Ahoskie; two granddaughters, Alison Anita Ruffin and her husband, Mark Tyburski, of Raleigh, and Meredith Joyner Bartlett and her husband, Justin Lee Bartlett, of Charlotte; two grandsons, Sterling Stokes Ruffin, Jr. and his wife, Stacy, of Greenville, and Hanes Williamson Joyner of Raleigh; and her sister, Cora Lee Harrell of Chesapeake, Virginia. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday January 30, 2018 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, with a celebration of life funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at other times at their home.
