COLERAIN – The Bertie Sheriff’s Office is searching for a lone suspect who robbed the Family Dollar store at gunpoint here Wednesday night.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the heist.

Bertie Sheriff John Holley described the suspect as a slim, black male who was armed with a handgun.

“The suspect was wrapped up, meaning he was hiding his identity by covering his face,” Holley said.

The Sheriff added that the suspect, “knew what to do upon entering the store.”

“He rushed to the first cash register at the front check-out and grabbed the cash,” Holley said. “Apparently, there wasn’t enough money at that register to his liking, so he went to the second register at the front check-out and grabbed the entire cash tray.”

Holley added that the suspect exited the store and was last seen running away on foot.

“We called in a tracking dog and searched the area in and around the store and out on highway 42, but the trail went cold,” he said.

Those with any information on this crime are urged to contact the Bertie Sheriff’s Office at 252-794-5330.

“We’re just so thankful there were not any injuries. My worst nightmare in cases like this where a weapon is used to commit a crime is that a store clerk or an innocent shopper is hurt, or worst even, killed,” Holley concluded.
