CONWAY, NC – Gurney O’Conial Burgess, Jr. age 83 of Conway, died on October 1, 2017 surrounded by his family.
He was born on April 12, 1934 to the late Gurney and Ethel Burgess. Mr. Burgess served his country in the US Army and Army Reserve for a total of eight years. Gurney was married to Janie Robbins on April 11, 1958 and to this marriage was born three children. He was a member of the Conway Baptist Church of Conway. Mr. Burgess was a member of the Pendleton Masonic Lodge, just receiving his fifty-year pin. He worked as a Bleach Plant Operator for Union Camp for thirty-eight years until retiring. He loved tinkering with TV’s, VCR’s, satellite receivers, etc.
Other than his mother and father Mr. Burgess is preceded in death by his wife, Janie Robbins Burgess and sister, Estelle Drake.
Gurney is survived by his daughter, Angela Burgess Freeman and her husband Brent of Lehi, UT; two sons, Gurney O’Conial Burgess, III and his wife Joyce of Conway, NC, and Joseph “Joe” Henry Burgess and his wife Beth of Conway, NC; sister, Annie Claire Holland of Virginia Beach, VA; three granddaughters, Samantha Matthews and her husband Brandon of Millennium, NC, Laura Ann Henderson of Conway, NC and Bailey Holt of Conway, NC; and three grandsons, Tyler Burgess of Conway, NC, Matthew Burgess of Roxobel, NC and Cody Allgood and his wife Jackie stationed in Hawaii.
Visitation will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 7:00-8:30 pm at Garrett-Sykes Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro, NC.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Garrett-Sykes in Rich Square with Rev. Bob Rogers officiating. The burial will follow at the Conway Cemetery in Conway, NC.
