WOODLAND – A shooting near here Friday night has turned into a murder investigation.

Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith said an individual was shot and later died at a residence located in Arrowhead Mobile Home Park, off NC 35 between Woodland and Potecasi.

The shooting occurred before midnight Friday, Smith said. Northampton deputies and criminal investigators rushed to the scene, securing the area in order for Northampton EMS paramedics to attend to the victim. That person, whose identity has not yet been released, succumbed to what was initially reported as two gunshot wounds.

“We worked this case all weekend and into today,” Smith told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald early Monday afternoon. “As of right now we have developed some suspects, but have yet to make any arrests. We hope to have some more information to share on Tuesday.”

Smith added that he called in the North Carolina SBI to assist in the murder investigation.
