Several area schools were victorious on the tennis courts this past week.
Ridgecroft School rolled over Greenfield School 8-1 Wednesday at the Rose Tennis Complex at Chowan University in Murfreesboro. The win upped their record on the young season to 2-0.
Taylor Jenkins, Matty Grace Gilliam, and Claire Place – the Rams’ top three seeds – were all victorious in their singles matches; as were teammates Mary Outland, Rachel Bennett, and Gracie Boswell. The Lady Knights fought hard with two matches going to three sets and another to a tiebreaker.
Ridgecroft then took two of three doubles matches to clinch the win.
“A very close match,” said Rams coach Elton Winslow. “Both teams played well and I am so proud of our girls and the grit they showed.”
Elsewhere, Bertie split its pair of matches. The Lady Falcons made it a sweep of Roanoke Rapids. Bertie won on the road 8-1 last week to open the season, then Wednesday they stung the Lady Yellow Jackets again 7-2 at the Windsor Tennis Courts as Lindsey Dickens, Emiley Dawson, Amari White, Kaleigh Freeman and Stephanie Castelloe won in singles. They then captured two of the three doubles matches to seal the win. Dickens and Alyssa Byrum dropped their match to Kristen Papillo and Abby Mederos, but Dawson and Freeman teamed up to stop Alexis Carter and Shane Wanget. while Dawson and White won over Roanoke Rapids’ Morgan Harmon and Assel Qasem.
A day earlier, on Tuesday, however, the J.A. Holmes Edenton Lady Aces knocked off Bertie 8-1. The Falcons stand at 2-2 on the season and open conference play on Tuesday at home hosting Northeastern.
Northeast Academy also split on the courts for the week. Monday they opened with a sweep of Hertford County, 8-0, as Carly Stephenson, Jessie Martin, Emalee Jones, Lizzy Smith, Carson Johnson, and Emma Hoyle swept all six singles matches over the Lady Bears. Stephenson/Jones, Martin/Smith, and Johnson/Hoyle then won the singles matches to complete the shutout.
Thursday against Northeastern in Elizabeth City, only Stephenson and Martin were singles winners out of 6, but the visiting Eagles did capture a pair of doubles wins to fall, 5-4
