‘Shot’ down

WINDOR – A combined effort by local and state law enforcement officials has led to multiple arrests in Bertie County for those operating illegal “shot” houses as well as those visiting those establishments to purchase non-taxed alcoholic beverages and involved in gambling.
Bertie County Sheriff John Holley stated that over the past two months, ALE (Alcohol Law Enforcement) agents along with his deputies have conducted investigations of several illegal ABC outlets/clubs within the county.
Holley stated that BCSO Detective Sgt. Matt Roebuck, Detective Martin Phelps, and Deputy Corporal Alvin Hendrix assisted with the investigations.
“Our investigation confirmed individuals were selling alcoholic beverages without ABC permits issued by the state of North Carolina,” Holley stated.
Search warrants were obtained and issued at the locations listed below, and the names of those arrested and charged were:
July 1 at 337 Nowell Farm Road, Colerain; arrests include:
Richard Watford of 337 Nowell Farm Road; two counts of possess for sell alcoholic beverages without ABC permits;
Maxine Perry of 337 Nowell Farm Road; two counts of possess for sell alcoholic beverages without ABC permits, and gambling;
Tammy Miller of 126 Pioneer Avenue, Colerain; gambling;
James Bell of 438 Old Merry Hill Road, Windsor; gambling;
Grady Cherry of 105 Freeman Street, Windsor; gambling;
Velma Perry of 103 Freeland Court, Winton; gambling; and
Willie Mitchell, 118 Harrell Road, Colerain; gambling.
July 15 at 731-B Cedar Landing Road, Windsor; those arrested were:
Timothy Smallwood of 728-B Cedar Landing Road, Windsor; two counts of possess for sell alcoholic beverages without ABC permits;
Ernest Davenport of 717 Ghent Street, Windsor; two counts of possess for sell alcoholic beverages without ABC permits; and
Tymone Gilliam of 501 Ghent Street, Windsor; possession of one-half ounce or less of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
‘We will continue to investigate complaints of this type of illegal activity,” Sheriff Holley remarked. “We thank the assistance of the ALE agents in helping to make these arrests.”
