Pork Fest turns ‘Sweet 16’

MURFREESBORO – Come early and stay until the end, bring all the family and have a wonderful day of fun and fellowship at the “Sweet Sixteen edition of the Roanoke-Chowan Pork-Fest on May 20 on the grounds of the Brady C. Jefcoat Museum, located on High Street in Murfreesboro. Following are the events you will enjoy at Pork-Fest:

8:30 to 11 am – Stroll down Pork Alley and observe  the teams cooking their pigs, smell the aroma and enjoy the beautifully decorated cooking sites.

9 am to 4 pm – Visit the Craft and Antique dealers displays and sales.

10 am to 3 pm – The SECU Fat Cat will entertain children and pose for photos.

10:30 am to 4 pm – Musical Variety Show on the outdoor stage (four bands).

After all the entries are judged, the slow-roasted pork is finely chopped by a team of volunteers and then Murfreesboro’s “secret sauce” is added prior to serving the lip-smacking meal to the crowd

10 am to 3 pm – Antique automobiles on display on High Street.

10 am to 4 pm – Free children’s games and sports skills contests.

10 am – Watch the licensed NC Pork Council Judges literally tear the BBQ pigs apart to determine which team has done the best job.

11 am to 1:30 pm – Tour all three floors of the Jefcoat Museum, the Bea and Harold Simmons Museum, and a preview of the Dr. and Mrs. Christopher White  “Watt Pottery” Museum located in the Home Economics Building (Almost 200 pottery pieces now on display).

11 am to 4 pm – Strawberry Shortcake on sale

12 noon to 3 pm – The best BBQ meal you will ever eat served under the “Big Top” along with Aunt Bertie’s Southern Sweet Tea.

12:30 to 1 pm – Awards Presentation on the outdoor stage to winners of the Culinary Judging.

Advance sale tickets are only $15 and are available in Murfreesboro at the Jefcoat Museum, the

Historical Association, Southern Bank, NAPA, Kings Landing Shops and the DMV.  In Ahoskie, purchase advance tickets at Wholesale Cash and Carry, The Table Spoon, and Mug Shotz Restaurants; and in Franklin at Smith’s Jewelry and Fred’s Restaurant.
