Rev. Dr. James Vaughan

DURHAM, NC – Rev. Dr. James Vaughan went home to be with his Lord on March 25, 2017.

Born March 7, 1943 in Hertford County, NC, to Mr. John Henry and Mrs. Jessie Majette Vaughan, he resided in New York, Portsmouth VA and finally Durham, NC. Educated at North Carolina Central University, Dr. Vaughan was a Frederick Douglass Journalism Fellow at New School for Social Research. He was network executive for CBS TV in New York; CBN in Virginia Beach, VA; and founder of WJCB TV 49 in Norfolk, VA.

He attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and received the Doctor of Divinity from Apex School of Theology. He pastored Abundant Life Assembly Church in Portsmouth VA and Durham NC.

Leaving to cherish his memory is his devoted wife, Renee Jamison Vaughan; son, Alvin Vaughan Murphy (Aurelia); daughters, Patrinia Arrington (Terry) and Meimii Vaughan Curham; grandchildren, Antonio, Ashley, Corey and Montez; great-grandchildren, Angel and Aking, Detonio, Aliyah, Nasir, Sincere, Antonio Jr., Siriah, Denari and Caston; and siblings, Rev. William Vaughan, Mrs. Katie Parker, Mrs. Elizabeth Lonnie (Thomas), and Mr. Malachi Vaughan. He was preceded in death by siblings Cecil and John Vaughan.

Visitation was held on Wednesday March 29 at Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Gardens.

Home-going celebration will be held Thursday, March 30, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Christian Center, 3518 Rose of Sharon Road, Durham, NC 27712. Interment will be at Carver Park Memorial Gardens in Murfreesboro, NC.
