Elenora E. Chavis

WINTON, NC – Elenora Ernestine Chavis, 87, departed this life peacefully on March 18, 2017. She was born on December 22, 1929 to the late Ernest and Bettie Stephenson. She was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 50 years, Argustus “Gus” Chavis.

She attended Robert L. Vann School in Ahoskie, NC.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Amaza Stephenson, and two grandchildren.

Elenora was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, where she served for many years in various church ministries – Chair of the Deaconess Board and Sunday School Teacher. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend, confidant, counselor, bible scholar, and teacher. She had a passion for serving and enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren about God. She was a retiree of Belk’s department store, volunteer for Hospice and Meals-on-Wheels, President of District A-1 Senior Citizen Association of North Carolina, Pleasant Plains Senior Citizens Club and a civil rights activist. She was a woman of strong faith who was considered a matriarch of her family and her community. She touched the lives of so many and will be sorely missed. May the life she lived speak for her!

Left to cherish her memory are her five children: A.R. “Bobby” Chavis (Janet) of Newport News, VA, Steven Chavis (Michelle) of Newport News, VA, Cheryl Lockett (John) of Hampton, VA, Trent Chavis (Angela) of Savannah, GA and Judy Simmons (Gregory) of Rocky Mount, NC; an adopted daughter, Brenda Manley of Cofield, NC; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one devoted niece, Linda Glenn of NY; two sisters-in-law, Christine Jones of Detroit, MI, and Willie Mae George of Silver Springs, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Hunter’s Funeral Home, 123 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Ahoskie, NC 27910. The family will receive friends during the wake on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Hunter’s Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, 801 US Hwy 13 South, Ahoskie, NC 27910.
