MURFREESBORO – A scholarship endowment fund has been established here at Chowan University in memory of Sheryl Brown Whitley of Pendleton.

Whitley passed away Feb. 13, 2017 at the young age of 47. She was a member of Ashley Grove Baptist Church and was in the first graduating class of Chowan University following its move to four-year status.

Sheryl worked in the mental health field for several years prior to returning to the family business, Brown’s Mobile Home. She dedicated her life to her family, especially her children. She cherished every morsel of time spent with her kids. She was humble, sweet, and beautiful inside and out. She always put everyone around her before herself. She was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She was loved deeply and will be missed intensely.

The Sheryl Brown Whitley Scholarship has been initiated by Sheryl’s parents, Wayne and Shirley Brown to honor their daughter’s memory as a Chowan University graduate, class of 1994. The endowment is established to provide financial assistance to a full-time student majoring in business administration who has performed academically and deemed to be worthy as identified by the faculty in the School of Business. First preference is given to students pursuing a concentration in management. Additional preference is given to students from Hertford County, Northampton County, the Roanoke-Chowan area and then to northeastern North Carolina.

Whitley will be missed greatly. However, this scholarship will keep her name and spirit alive, as it will support an outstanding business major, even in her passing. Chowan University is grateful for the life of Sheryl Brown Whitley and send our sincerest sympathies to her family and friends during this time.
