Lady Falcons’ gain weekend split

WINDSOR – Bertie High’s girls basketball team ran their conference record to 7-0 with a 61-17 thrashing of Currituck here Friday night, but stumbled on the road one night later as they fell 66-62 to Williamston Riverside.

Bertie is 16-1 overall and 7-0 in the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

Friday’s game opened with a 10-1 first quarter before the Lady Falcon offense woke up in the second quarter.  Autum Morings got a steal and lay-up and Akyia King landed a soft jump shot for a 19-3 Bertie lead before Currituck tried to mount a comeback.  An 8-0 run got the Lady Knights as close as they’d come all night, 19-11 before Bertie started to pour it on again.  A 15-2 Bertie run made it a 34-13 game at halftime.

The Knights managed just two points in the third quarter and trailed 52-17 after three complete.  Bertie held Currituck scoreless in the fourth quarter and at one point scored 22 points in a row en route to the blowout win.

In addition to Morings with 19 points and 13 for King, Jomiya Early scored 10 points with nine for Carlisa Spivey.  Nyasia Barnes had seven, with two for Akia Jordan and one point for Sha’Nidra Outlaw.   Lauren Gerni led Currituck with 11 points, while Lindsey Lykins had four and Trinity Evans scored two.
