SUFFOLK, VA – The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy (NSA) 31st Annual Art Show and Sale will open on Saturday, Jan. 28 and will continue through Sunday, Feb. 3.

Each year the show draws crowds throughout Hampton Roads and is a showcase for new and established

artists. Over 175 artists will be represented this year, with diverse offerings from paintings to multimedia works of art. Prices have ranged from $10 to $7,000. The Art Show and Sale benefits the Arts Program at NSA and also provides teachers with the opportunity to incorporate the art and displays into their curriculum.

NSA is pleased to announce that Fen Rascoe will serve as this year’s featured artist and honorary chairman. Fen currently resides in Windsor.

He grew up drawing during his childhood and took several art classes in high school and college, but he never considered continuing his art professionally until recently. Since deciding to pursue his artistic passion, Fen has studied under several nationally renowned artists and has spent most of his time outside painting en plein air in the flatlands and coastal regions of Eastern North Carolina.

As an artist, Fen’s goal is to transform an ordinary everyday subject into an extraordinary unique visual experience that allows the viewer to passionately reconnect with an otherwise familiar and unemotional object or figure. By loosely handling oil paint with soothing, limited colors, Fen seeks to achieve harmony within the supporting peripheral areas of his painting, while leaving more intense non-natural colors for the tighter focal point. He paints alla prima, or wet on wet, all in one session and his style could be considered contemporary impressionism. Fen enjoys painting in the moment either on location or still life.

If not painting, Fen enjoys farming and spending time with his wife of twenty years, Lisa, daughter Joyner

and son Nixon.
