Chowan’s Jeremy Smith wins CIAA honor

CHARLOTTE – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in conjunction with the CIAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association announced on Wednesday morning that Chowan University guard-forward Jeremy Smith has been named as the CIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the final week of December 2016.
The Kenansville native scored a game-high 22 points in a 79-67 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Dec. 30. He also grabbed seven rebounds in the victory.
Smith is currently the Hawks second leading scorer this season, averaging 15.5 points per game. Smith has led the team in scoring in four of the team’s 10 outings this season, including a season-high 26 points in an early season non-conference win over Davis & Elkins University.
Chowan stands 8-2 overall and posts a 3-0 record in CIAA play. They are undefeated at home, standing tall with a 7-0 home court record.
The Hawks’ road trip to begin the new year continues tonight (Saturday) when they visit the Rams of Winston-Salem State University for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
