Slick roads prompt numerous closings

Beautiful, sunny skies greeted Roanoke-Chowan area residents on Sunday.

Unfortunately, that ample sunshine failed to put a dent in the snow and ice that remains in the aftermath of Saturday’s winter storm.

Despite lesser amounts of snow initially predicted for the local area, brutally cold temperatures on Sunday prevented any natural melting of the icy mess left on local roads. That has led to numerous closings on Monday, to include:

Bertie County Schools

Bertie County local government

Bertie County District Court

Bethel Assembly Christian Academy

Damascus Outreach Afterschool Tutoring (Eure)

Gates County Public Schools

Gates County local government

Halifax Community College

Hertford County Public Schools

Hertford County local government

Hertford County Superior Court (Jurors: Do Not Report!)

Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy

Lawrence Academy

Northampton County Public Schools

Northampton County local government

Northeast Academy

Ridgecroft School

Roanoke-Chowan Community College

North Carolina DOT crews continued on Sunday to concentrate their efforts on the primary roads across the four local counties. Many secondary roads remain covered with snow and ice.

Mother Nature will be of little or no help in assisting the snow/ice removal. Sunshine will again be in abundance on Monday, but the high temperature (29 degrees) will fail to reach the freezing mark. Monday’s low is forecasted at 12 degrees.

It will warm up a bit on Tuesday with a high temp in the low 40’s.
