WOODLAND – Gladys Outland Powell, 89, of Woodland, NC went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 while residing at The Manor Memory Care Facility in Rich Square.

Mrs. Powell was born in Woodland, NC on March 1, 1927 to the late Russell and Elsie Outland. She graduated from Woodland Olney School and was a life-long member of Woodland United Methodist Church. She was a devoted wife, mother, and a loving grandmother who was employed for many years as a skilled seamstress, working both in public jobs as well as successfully starting and operating her own business called Powell’s Interiors after her retirement.

She is predeceased by her husband, Walter Russell Powell; her parents, Russell and Elsie Outland; and five of her dear brothers and sisters.

Survivors include daughters Fran P. Ellis of Wilmington NC; Jane P. Lundy of Fuquay Varina, NC; one brother, Edward “Big Boy” Outland of Lasker, NC; and three grandchildren, Jeff and Andy Ellis of Wilmington, NC and Samantha Lundy of Union, KY.

A memorial service will be held at Woodland United Methodist Church at 11:30 am on Saturday, November 26, 2016 with Reverend Susan Harrison officiating. It will be followed by a brief prayer at the graveside at Woodland Cemetery.

Our Mother lived a very long and successful life. She was well-known both near and far for the beautiful draperies and bedspreads that she skillfully designed and sewed herself; and also for her wonderful ability to prepare the most delicious desserts which she frequently shared with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by many who knew her.

Cremation services are being provided by the Society of the Carolinas, 2205 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27604.
