CIAA honors Chowan trio

CHARLOTTE – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in conjunction with the Football Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association announced the CIAA Football Players, Rookie, and Coach of the Week on Monday evening.

Chowan University’s Darell Cherubin was named CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Week.  Randall Dixon and Demetrius Newberry grabbed CIAA Quarterback and CIAA Linebacker of the Week honors, respectively.

Cherubin’s efforts allowed the Hawks to pile up a season-high 650 yards of offense on Saturday against Johnson C. Smith University.

Dixon had another standout week for the Chowan Blue and White.  He completed 27-35 pass attempts for a school record 404 passing yards in Saturday’s 47-14 victory.  The Rock Hill, S.C native threw five touchdown passes in the victory.  This week marks the second consecutive CIAA Quarterback of the Week honor for Dixon.

Newberry earned CIAA Linebacker of the Week honors for the third straight week. He recorded a team-high eight tackles (five solo, three assisted) with two sacks and two tackles for loss (24 yards).  The Brunswick, Georgia native also recorded a forced fumble and fumble recovery for the Hawks.

Saturday’s 47-14 win over Johnson C. Smith marked the third straight victory for the Hawks.  Chowan posts a 4-1 record on the season and stands 2-0 in CIAA play.

The Hawks begin CIAA Northern Division play against Bowie State University this weekend. Due to Hurricane Matthew, that game, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been changed to a 6:30 p.m. kickoff tonight (Thursday) at James G. Garrison Stadium.
