Chowan, Belmont Abbey battle to stalemate

BELMONT – The Chowan University men’s soccer team battled through two overtime periods against Belmont Abbey College before settling for a 2-2 double overtime draw on Tuesday.
Chowan saw an early lead squandered as the Crusaders stole the momentum late in regulation to force the contest into overtime.
The Hawks move to 3-3-1 on the season while Belmont Abbey moves to 1-3-1 on the year after Tuesday’s game.
Terell Williamson put the Hawks on the board in the 31st minute of play using a cross from Denis Roule.
After carrying a 1-0 lead into the halftime break, Belmont Abbey came out firing as Liam Quinn scored just three minutes into the second half from 18 yards out. Carl Kennedy headed the ball far post using a cross from Mike Dowling less than one minute later, giving Chowan a 2-1 edge.
Clay Dimick came through with the equalizer for Belmont Abbey at the 67:32 mark using an assist from Nick Fuller.
Both teams fought through the end of regulation with neither team able to find the back of the net, forcing overtime play. Belmont Abbey recorded four shots in the overtime period with the Hawks accounting for one, but again, both teams came up scoreless, sending the contest into a second overtime period.

The Crusaders recorded 20 shots over the course of the competition while the Hawks totaled 19 shots on the afternoon.
Paul Migliarina and Williamson both tallied three shots for Chowan while Jamie McNicholas, Kennedy, Jordan Radisavljevic, and Lee Wattam each added two shots for the Hawks. Carlos Ramirez collected nine saves in goal for the Hawks.
Dimick led all players in the contest with eight shots for Belmont Abbey. Mark Trompeter added three shots while Wes Holifield notched eight saves for the Crusaders.
The Hawks return to action today (Saturday) as Chowan travels to take on UNC Pembroke. Game time is slated for 3:30 pm.
