CIAA honors Moses, Newberry

CHARLOTTE – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in conjunction with the Football Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association announced the CIAA Football Players, Rookie, and Coach of the Week on Monday evening.  Chowan University’s Phillip Moses and Demetrius Newberry were named CIAA Offensive Lineman and Linebacker of the week, respectively.

Moses’ efforts led to a 35-28 win over West Florida.  Chowan’s offense tallied a season-high 529 offensive yards in the victory (399 passing, 130 rushing). Newberry recorded a game-high 14 tackles (seven solo, seven assisted) in the win.  The Brunswick, Georgia native recorded one sack (six yards) and three tackles for loss (10 yards).

The Hawks handed the University of West Florida their first loss of their inaugural season. Chowan looks to build on the momentum of a 2-1 start to the year as the Hawks travel to Livingstone College on Saturday.  The contest marks the first in CIAA play for the year. Kick-off is slated for 1 pm.

Others honored by the CIAA on Monday were:
QUARTERBACK OF THE WEEK

#6 Amir Hall, Bowie State continues to put up impressive numbers, completing 33-of-50 passes (2 interceptions) for a game-high 418 passing yards and three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing).
RECEIVER OF THE WEEK

#17 Victor Tabbs, Elizabeth City State – In the Vikings’ 35-30 win over Morehouse College, Tabbs had 8 receptions for 154 yards and two touchdowns.
OFFENSIVE BACK OF THE WEEK

#8 William Stanback, Virginia Union rushed for 94 yards on nine carries, including three touchdowns in VUU’s 37-14 win over Winston-Salem State.
DEFENSIVE BACK OF THE WEEK

#42 Tarell Cisneros-Harrison, Virginia State gave the Trojans their first touchdown against the KSU Thorobreds with a 15-yard fumble recovery. He also secured 4 solo and 3 assisted tackles during the matchup to lift VSU to a 20-7 victory.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK

#90 Tremayne Sweat, Elizabeth City State had a solid outing in the Vikings’ 35-30 win over Morehouse College. He finished the game with 5 tackles (3 solo) including 2.5 sacks for a loss of 16 yards.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

#17 Matias Lambrecht, Johnson C. Smith punted seven times for a 44.7 average with a long of 62 yards.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

#47 Lavatiae Kelly, Virginia Union had four catches for 97 yards and rushed for 15 more yards in VUU’s 37-14 win over Winston-Salem State. Kelly also returned a punt for 31 yards.
COACH OF THE WEEK

Mark James, Virginia Union guided VUU to a 37-14 win over defending CIAA Champion Winston-Salem State on Saturday. It was also the first time the Panthers had won in Bowman-Gray Stadium since 2002.
