GASTON – An unidentified woman from Gaston remains in the hospital after a savage attack by her pet Rottweiler dog.

Northampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Old Emporia Road in Gaston about 5 p.m. on July 21, in reference to a dog bite.

When deputies arrived on scene, they discovered a female victim had been mauled by a Rottweiler.

Deputies discovered the Rottweiler belonged to the female victim.

The victim suffered multiple serious injuries during the attack, according to Northampton Sheriff Jack Smith, and was transported by helicopter to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Captain M. DeLoatch Sr., chief investigator for the Sheriff’s Office, said the dog was not vicious when they arrived at the scene.

Nevertheless, Northampton County Animal Control responded to the scene and removed the dog from the property.

The dog is now in quarantine to see if it has rabies.

Sheriff Smith added that several other dogs were observed on the property, but none of those animals took part in the attack.

Smith thanked Northampton County EMS, Gaston EMS, Gaston Volunteer Fire Department, Northampton County Animal Control and the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office deputies for their help.
