Cora L. Newbern

COLERAIN – Cora Leigh Waters Newbern, 83, of Meadow Road, Colerain, passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Edenton.

Mrs. Newbern was born in Powellsville, Bertie County, on September 23, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Henry and Addie Wynn Waters. A farmer’s wife, she had also owned and operated Kenco Florist in Ahoskie for over 20 years. Raised in the fellowship of Powellsville Baptist Church, she was a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Newbern; her son, Mickey Newbern; her sisters, Helen Rae Waters and Merelynn Baker; and by her brother, James Edmund Waters.

Surviving are her sister-in-law, Shirley Waters of Powellsville; four nieces, Donna Waters Farless and husband Roland of Edenton, Mary Lou Baker Sullivan and husband Maurice, Gloria Baker, and Deborah Baker Palmer, all of Harrellsville; three nephews, Merrill Waters and wife Cecille, and Gerald Waters and wife Rhetta, all of Powellsville, and Clark Waters and wife Pegi of Orlando, FL; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 23 at 2:00 p.m. in Highland Memorial Gardens, and will be officiated by The Rev. Tommy Tripp.
