Windsor sweeps Ahoskie Legion juniors

WINDSOR – Post 37 swept a junior American Legion doubleheader here Wednesday over Ahoskie Post 102 by scores of 10-1 and 12-2 and the Rebels earned at least a tie for the final Area-One playoff spot.

The result to determine who earned a trip to Manteo for the post-season, beginning this weekend, won’t be known until Windsor completes its season with a home and away date with Edenton Post 40. Those games were not completed by press-time.

In Wednesday’s first game, Post 37 opened with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Daquan Wilson walked and eventually scored on Lance Freeman’s sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Windsor lead after one.

The Rebels added four more runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded Freeman was hit by a pitch for an RBI, another run scored on a wild pitch, still another on an error and Brandon Roberson drove in the fourth run when he reached on a fielder’s choice. It was now 5-0, Windsor, after three innings.

Ahoskie left the bases loaded in both the third and fourth innings. Windsor, meanwhile, added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wilson reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on an error. Freeman drove in a couple more with a two-run double into the gap in left centerfield, and it was now 8-0, Rebels, after four complete.

Ahoskie broke through with their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning when Zeb Askew walked and eventually scored on Evan Lassiter’s RBI single to right field.

Windsor got the last two runs of the contest on a Miller Trowell RBI single, while the other run scored on an error. The score was 10-1 after six and Ahoskie failed to score in the top of the seventh for the nine-run final.

Evan Lassiter and Trevor Lee pitched for Ahoskie while Scoop Hoggard went the distance for Post 37 and got the win, allowing just three hits: two from Lassiter and one from Lee.

Windsor had four hits: one each by Miller Trowell, Alden Cottle, Wilson, and Freeman, who also drove in four runs.

In Game-two, Windsor opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jared Speight had an RBI single and later scored on a base-knock by Evan Wells. The third run scored on an error for a 3-0 Post 37 start after one inning.

Windsor broke the game open with eight runs after batting around in the bottom of the second. Kyle Cullipher, Brandon Ball and Alden Cottle all singled to load the bases. Cullipher scored on an error, James Brooks bases-loaded walk brought home Ball, and Cottle scored on an error. Later in the inning Wells had a two-run single, Cullipher had an RBI single, Wells scored on a wild pitch, and Zach Castelloe had an RBI single. The Rebels had built an 11-0 lead after two complete.

Ahoskie scored two runs in the top of the fourth. Lee singled to left and later scored on a wild pitch, and Edward Bradley drove in the other with an RBI single. That made the score 11-2 Windsor after four innings.

Post 37’s final run came on an RBI single by Brooks in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game under the 10-run rule.

Trent Munford and Jordan Robinson pitched for Ahoskie. Ryan Hoggard got the win for Windsor, as Cottle and White also pitched.

Ahoskie had five hits: two by Lee and solo safeties by Lassiter, Edwards, and Bradley. Windsor had 11 hits: two apiece by Cottle, Wells, and Cullipher. Daniel Castelloe, Zach Castelloe, Brooks, Speight, and Ball all had one hit each.

Ahoskie is now 4-16 and 3-7 in league play. Post 102 ended the season Friday night with a non-conference home double-header against Perquimans. Windsor raised its record to 8-11 overall and 3-6 in conference with their final pair coming against Edenton.
