WINDSOR – Showing no ill effects of their heartbreaking one-run loss to Beaufort County last Thursday, Windsor’s Post 37 junior American Legion team bounced back from that loss to post an 8-6 win over Wilson Post 13 here on Saturday.

The win broke a four-game slide for the Rebels.

Scoop Hoggard drove in three runs of the four Windsor scored in the first inning, but it was three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning that sealed the win. Trenton White picked up the win with six innings of four-hit ball with four strikeouts. Lance Freeman pitched the scoreless seventh and got the save.

“Very proud of my guys,” said Windsor coach Bobby Harmon. “After the way the Washington game ended, I knew my kids would come out focused and they did just that. Trenton battled through 6 innings and Lance threw really well to earn the save.”

Wilson got a run in the top of the first before Windsor went to work. Daquan Wilson and White opened with singles before Miller Trowell reached on an error to load the bases. Scoop Hoggard followed with a double to left that cleared the sacks and made it 3-1, Windsor. The Rebels got their final run of the frame when Scoop Hoggard scored on a Brandon Roberson sacrifice fly.

Wilson got four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-4 lead before Windsor got the equalizer. Miller Trowell singled to left, stole second, and scored on Roberson’s RBI single to left. It was 5-5 after three complete innings.

Wilson re-took the lead with a run in the top of the fifth before Windsor put the game away. Trailing 6-5, Hoggard drew a one-out walk, Roberson was hit by a pitch, and Ryan Hoggard walked to load the bases. Wood Trowell then drew a walk for an RBI, tying the game at 6-6. Roberson scored when Ethan Hughson reached on a fielder’s choice, and Ryan Hoggard scored on Wilson’s ground-out. Windsor pitching then retired six of the next seven batters to preserve the win.

Windsor had six hits, one each by Wilson, White, Roberson, Miller Trowell, Scoop Hoggard, and Ryan Hoggard.

“We strung enough hits together and played great situational baseball,” added Harmon. “(This was) just a big win for us.”

Windsor climbs within a game of .500 at 5-6, 3-3 in league play. The Rebels next play three on the road before hosting Manteo on June 27 at Bertie High Baseball Field
